A Math Teacher's Journey: Inspiring Change and Advocating for Education Reform

 Welcome to The Classroom Chronicle!

I've spent the last 15 years shaping young minds as a high school math teacher in a rural district. The joy of witnessing a student's "aha" moment, the challenge of inspiring a reluctant learner, and the satisfaction of seeing them apply math in real-world situations have fueled my passion for education.

As a dedicated advocate for educators, I've actively participated in my local and regional teachers' union. Through these organizations, I've had the privilege of seeing the behind-the-scenes work that is necessary to provide safe working conditions, fair wages, and increased support for public education. In the past year, through experiences such as supporting our local paraeducators association in their strike for IDP salary increases from the district to network and being a part of the statewide union representative assembly, I have again valuable insights into the importance of advocacy and supporting colleagues both locally with the district and state wide with our elected representatives. I believe that by empowering teachers, we can create a more equitable and effective learning environment for all students.

Through this weekly blog, I aim to share my experiences, insights, and passion for math education. I'll delve into the challenges and rewards of teaching math in rural schools, discuss strategies for improving student engagement, and advocate for policies that support educators and public schools. I'm also excited to explore topics like equity in math education, the impact of technology on learning, the importance of teacher well-being, the importance of getting involved in local teachers unions, and policies and politics of education and how remaining engaged in politics can help provide the foundation for a strong public education system both in the State of Washington, but nationally.

Join me on this journey as we work together to create a more equitable and inspiring future for math education!
